Marla Black – At Home Here in New Brunswick

Occupation: Producer/Actor/Music Supervisor

Place of Birth: Calgary, AB but  raised in Moncton, NB

Currently Resides: Toronto, ON

Where’s your favourite place in New Brunswick to grab a coffee?

The Laundromat Espresso Bar in Moncton or The Bridge Street Café in Sackville (I used to live above it and have ordered many a dark roast on my way to class!) My Granma and I also like to go to the Cake Box (Moncton) for a treat. Their cupcakes are delicious.

Where’s your favourite place in New Brunswick to grab a pint?

Mount Allison’s Pub – many good nights spent there. The Laundromat in Moncton gets another shout out. Clearly I am a creature of habit! And you can transition from afternoon coffee to evening drinks without moving. Love that. I also enjoy when the guys from Botsford Productions (Moncton) have people over on their roof top for drinks! It’s nice to see Moncton sparkly at night.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in New Brunswick?

Moncton’s Framers Market – it’s the best place to run into friends, old and new. And Fredericton’s Farmer’s market. My cousin, Angela Black, sells the most beautiful water colour cards (Random paper and fabrics) and I love to stock up when I’m around. I guess I have a weakness for markets! Frenchy’s is also pretty awesome and I’ve grown to appreciate it more since moving to Toronto.

Where in New Brunswick would we stand to see your favourite view?

It’s a tie. The trails along the Fundy coast. I love that area. The huge rocks and the ocean. It’s gorgeous. And my parent’s backyard, because that means I’m  home and on vacation!

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit New Brunswick:

  1. You have to see the Hopewell Rocks and if you make it all the way to Alma – sticky buns are a must!
  2. Go to the beach! Shediac is great in the summer.
  3. Pop into Sackville and check out the amazing music scene that is happening there (or the people that have come out of there!). It’s such a hot bed of artistic action! I love it. David Myles is a favourite.

What makes New Brunswick such a special place on earth for you?

My family is there! It’s home to some of the greatest and sweetest people I know. Even though I’m living in Toronto, I find myself working with East Coasters all the time. NB’s also close to the water. I have so many good memories at the cottage and at the beach. And the air. Every time I get off the plane it’s the first thing I notice – it’s sooo clean!
