Festival of New Dance

The 21st Festival of New Dance kicks off tonight 8pm at LSPU and runs from October 11th - October 16th, 2011 in St. John's, NL. It is a celebration of world class contemporary dance – with not to be missed electrifying, breathtaking and moving performances.

Festival of New DanceThis evening’s Opening Gala Night features exciting contemporary dance by Governor General’s Award winner for Lifetime Achievement Margie Gillis; established local favourite Sarah Joy Stoker and the exciting emerging choreography of Lynn Panting (click here for video)

Wednesday, October 12. 8 pm. LSPU Hall: Moonhorse Dance Theatre (Dances in a Small Room) and Jacques Poulin-Denis/Grand Poney (Cible de Dieu)  – Contemporary dance from Toronto’s Claudia Moore and Dan Wild, choreographed by Tedd Robinson and James Kudelka and interdisciplinary, physically impressive dance from dancer/sound-artist Jacques Poulin-Denis.

Thursday, October 13. Chris Driedzic, Susanna Hood and Shawn Pinchbeck. (The Bather)  An installation work combining sound and movement, The Bather allows the viewer to become a participant in an intimate relationship with a projection of a naked bather.

Thursday, October 13. 8 pm. LSPU Hall : hum (Shudder) – A challenging, dystopian dance triptych by acclaimed Canadian choreographer Susanna Hood. Giving voice to the silently FOR WEBShudder 2 (Jeremy Mimnagh)screaming canvases of Francis Bacon.

Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15 , 8 pm, LSPU Hall: Cas Public  (Variations S) and  MAX Dancers (Friday) and Andrea Tucker – Dance Studio East (Sat.) – A not-to-be-missed energetic hip-hop and ballet influenced performance by the Montreal-based company Cas Public, performing Variations S, a work inspired by the Rite of Spring and danced to a mash-up of Stravinsky samples.

Friday, October 14th and Saturday, October 15th. 6 pm, Venue St. Thomas’ Church (Canon Hall): Natasha Torres-Garner (REAL) and Catherine Wright  (There Where My Soul Fits In)  – Winnipeg’s Natasha Torres-Garner is a physically impressive dancer and a talented emerging choreographer. Local multi-disciplinary artist Catherine Wright will also perform her new work inspired by the works of Edvard Munch.

Friday, October 14, Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, Locations Atlantic Place/Scotia Square and Avalon Mall: Corpus (Les Moutons and Flock of Flyers) – See the surrealist humour-filled work of Corpus, whether uncannily imitating the dead stares of a flock of sheep or a group of grounded pilots. Setting their works in public places, Corpus, injects humour and absurdity into our everyday business.

Friday, 12:30 and 2pm Atlantic Place (2pm show at Scotia Square, weather permitting); Saturday & Sunday at noon (Les Moutons) and 1:30pm (Flock of Flyers) Avalon Mall. FREE!!!
