Dan Swinimer …It’s All Relative

Occupation: Musician / Songwriter / Producer / Audio Engineer*  see SABS note

Place of Birth: Burlington, ON

Currently Resides: Vancouver, BC

What are your family ties to NS?

My Dad was born and raised in Gold River Nova Scotia, and much of his side of the family still reside there today

Where’s your favourite place in NS to grab a coffee?

Hmmmmm, not many coffee shops in Gold River, but Tim Hortons is close and always does the trick! Not very cultured I suppose, but what can I say - I'm addicted!

Where’s your favourite place in NS to grab a pint?

The Gold River Social Club! (That would be my Uncle Raymond's shed) Other than that - I suppose I'd be lying if I said that I haven't enjoyed a few pints at The Liquor Dome. There are so many cool little pubs in Halifax that are just oozing with character - and I've enjoyed pints at most of them!

What’s the one dish you crave when you’re away from Nova Scotia?

Very few days pass that I don't crave a pizza from Big Reds, finished off with some  home-made fudge - Aunt Joanie's recipe of course.

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?:

So many to choose from, but the view from the border of Western Shore and Gold River combines extraordinary beauty and nostalgia, and has inspired me to write many songs

3 things I’ve gotta do when I visit Nova Scotia

1. Visit all my relatives - and there are a lot!

2. Spend an afternoon walking around Chester.

3. Play my guitar. Nova Scotia is the most inspirational place in Canada - maybe the world for me - I often write my best material while I'm there.

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

Beautiful scenery, beautiful people, and many of my best childhood memories. I've travelled North America extensively throughout my career as a musician, and there is no where I have been that is more magical than Nova Scotia. True Story - I have actually crossed the street in downtown Halifax - only because the passing cars thought my intention was to cross…and stopped for me! Try that in Toronto! …And let's not forget The Trailer Park Boys!

  1. Awesome....beautifully captures Nova Scotia's magic. The Gold River Social Club is definitely the best place to enjoy a pint...along with some steamed mussels and some of Uncle Raymond's home-made stawberry~rhubarb wine...with his ghetto blaster playing awesome home-grown music in the background!!!

  2. Pook - All of our best times happened in Nova Scotia - and your musical talent inspired I'm sure by all the parties out at Uncle Raymond's camp - Ross singing Linda on My Mind, Uncle Raymond playing the mandolin, Andrew and Valerie singing Betty Lou's Going Out Tonight and For the Good Times, the rare times that Colleen would sing (so well!), and the not so rare times that Aunt Joanie would sing (Delta Dawn) - how I miss those days. Last summer after my girls' first time at an evening sing song, Madeleine said it was the best night of her life - the magic lives on... Love Jinkles xo
