Donna Alward – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation: Romance Writer

Place of Birth: Keswick Ridge, New Brunswick

Currently Resides: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

Timmies – I’m totally a Tim Hortons girl. And since they’re on every corner, I never have to go very long without.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

Olivers – the pub at The Inn on the Lake in Fall River. The food is amazing. Even better is the patio in the summer.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

I love it in the Annapolis Valley. Anytime I go I hit three main places – one (or more) of the fantastic wineries, Fox Hill Cheese, and Noggins Farm Market.

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

How can I pick just one? I love being near the water so sitting on a deck with friends, blue skies and the sound of the ocean (or lake) is pretty near perfect, I think!

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:

1. Visit the Annapolis Valley in the fall (The produce! The colours!)

2. Spend a day in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay

3. Tour Halifax on the Harbour Hopper, tour the Keith’s brewery and finish up with fresh fish and chips.

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

The Maritimes are like no other place I know. We have such a distinct culture from the way we speak to our special sense of humour. I love how it’s got such a laid back energy about it and yet it’s very real and vital. There’s a sense of connection here that I’ve never felt in quite the same way anywhere else. There’s also such a rich storytelling tradition that it makes living here a perfect fit for me.
