Fergus O’Byrne – At Home Here in Newfoundland & Labrador

Occupation: Musician/ Music Educator

Place of Birth:  Dublin, Ireland

Currently resides: St. John’s, NL

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a coffee?

I tend to wander around a bit and drop in wherever is handy.

Where’s your favourite place in Newfoundland & Labrador to grab a pint?

Yellowbelly Brewery and Public House on the corner of George and Water Street.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Newfoundland & Labrador?

Shopping is not a favourite pastime of mine – probably the grocery store.

Where in Newfoundland would we stand to see your favourite view?

The view from Signal Hill looking out over the ocean is spectacular, but also the view of the Narrows from The Rooms is pretty hard to beat.

Name 3 things we've gotta do when we visit Newfoundland & Labrador:

1. Spend the weekend at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in St. John’s

2. Take in as much live music as you can – there’s lots of it around.

3. Take a skidoo trip in country in April Month on the south coast of Labrador, preferably with someone who owns a cabin where you can spend the night – it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

What makes Newfoundland & Labrador such a special place on earth for you?

It’s where I was able to make my career as a musician for the last 40 years, first with Ryan’s Fancy and then with Jim Payne.  It’s been a very welcoming place and the people I’ve met, in particular the musician’s and singers who’ve preceded me, have been very generous in passing along their knowledge, not only to me but to all those who are interested in listening to them.

  1. I was cleaning yesterday in my mother's old home, and found a Ryan's Fancy songbook from 1978 , all signed up by the three of them back in the day. I remember seeing them at the Parish Centre in Antigonish at that time. (my introduction to Irish music). I still love, and always will love, the classic songs from this trio.
