With some inside scoop from The Trews - see below

Ahhh the music video.  Such a great way to extend the message of the music…sometimes a literal translation – other times shockingly unrelated visuals are used.  You can have the live performance mixed with behind the scenes, moving images from far-away lands…you can simply sing to camera while standing on a beach twirling around and around…you get the picture.  And now YOU get to VOTE on which video you like best.

video of the yearThis year’s ECMA Bell Aliant Fan’s Choice Video of the Year Nominees have been announced and the polls are open – all you need to do is choose. You'll find the complete list along with links to their videos on line at the end of this post.

From now until the voting closes at midnight (AST) on April 16th  we’ll post the videos in a rotating fashion (in no particular order) with a smidge of information on the one currently featured…

Rounding out the category, from Nova Scotia  The Trews with their video for "Highway of Heroes".  A great song with a patriotic message for sure.  Director Tim Martin cuts between poignant performance, footage of our Canadian military in action and shots of a real service along the Highway of Heros.  Truly effective.  We asked The Trews to comment on the video and here's the note we received from them earlier today...

"We had a little trepidation going into the making of the video for Highway of Heroes. We wanted to make a video that was respectful of what the troops are going through but didn't trivialize their plight, or glorify the war in any way, either. I think director Tim Martin did a great job of walking that fine line" The Trews

A great job indeed.  Well that's it - we've profiled and heard from all the nominees.  Now it's up to you to cast your vote and remember you've only got until midnight Saturday, April 16th to do so.  Picking a favourite in this category is no easy task - so good luck to you in your decision making and good luck to everyone nominated! Back to St.John's, NL we go for the always awesome Hey Rosetta! and their video for "A Thousand Suns - Live".  Directed by Noah Pink - the video captures the group in all their glory on stage at the famed Holy Heart of Mary Theatre.  We got word from the director himself late last night - about the 'pre-pro', the shooting and the great results...

"Before directing this video, my team and I sat down and watched 'The Last Waltz,' 'Stop Making Sense,' and 'Heart of Gold.' I love how the shooting style is so much calmer in these films compared to current music videos, yet it somehow gives off an energy that's so much more timeless and real.

As for the shooting experience, well, we were in Newfoundland during the holidays, and needless to say, we took full advantage of the holiday cheer! It was sleepless, but it was epic." n (Noah Pink)

Ya gotta love live - great job on that one for sure!  If it's your favourite vote now - time is running out.

Up next - from Prince Edward Island's own Paper Lions with their video for  "Lost the War" - JP Poliquin & Nathan Boey directors.  Super cool like the fellas themselves -this video uses super cool FX to relate their message. We were told the flip books in the video were put together using actual still photos being flipped by the director. In fact, all the photo animation was done using physical photos and stop motion photography.  When we asked the boys to drop a line re: their favourite time on set - here's the inside scoop from drummer David MacDonald...

"I think the best time of the shoot was when our guitar player Colin arrived on set in an all green unitard. It made for some great green screen prop comedy. He was playing different instruments and stooped down so our lead singer John could lean unnaturally far back on him - the optical illusions were great, but the outfit sounded the 'fun-funsten' alarm." DCM

Wow! Hate to say TMI when we did ask for inside scoop... all we know for sure is you guys rock!!! Thanks!

If this is your favourite video - don't waste any time - vote now.

Up next - Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold with the video for "Broken Hearted Beat".  Directed by JP Poliquin, this video takes you on an emotional ride - literally!  The past and the present dreamily portray the lyrics to this one.  Definitely an effective dance done here with the editing. Here's what Tim told us about the experience...

"Broken Hearted Beat” was our first ‘real’ music video, and making it was a pretty cool experience. JP Poliquin is super talented and brought the song to life on the screen. Seeing it from the beginning planning stages grow into a great video that reached #1 on the Much More Music Countdown was a pretty surreal experience :) We're honoured to have it nominated for Video of the Year at this year's ECMA's!  Tim Chaisson

Bravo boys!  Check out the video and if it's your favourite - give it your vote.

Today we feature the only video by a Female Artist nominated this year and that's Jenn Grant's "You'll Go Far" - directed by Drew Lightfoot. Filmed on location in beautiful Newfoundland & Labrador - it's as lovely as the song it celebrates.  Here's what Ms. Grant had to say about the video...

"Newfoundland is such a magical place, and it was the ideal landscape for our video for 'You'll go far'. Director Drew Lightfoot and cinematographer Jeremy Benning shot at many points all up the Northern Coast. It was an incredible few days for me. I didn't arrive in time for the boat trip where they were able to capture the beautiful Icebergs on film, but I did arrive just in time to almost hit a moose driving from Deer Lake! Beware of the moose…
And of the tiny art creatures created by Stewart Jones." Jenn Grant

Thanks for your thoughts and the tip Jenn!  By all means give "You'll Go Far" a look and if it's your favourite - make your vote count below.

The spotlight today moves onto Prince Edward Island and features nominee Two Hours Traffic with their video for "Noisemaker".  Directors Adrian Carter and Richie Mitchell have chosen the animated route and a fantastic treatment is realized - with the band front and centre and sounding great.  Lead singer and guitarist Liam Corcoran had this to say about their video...

"Noisemaker is the only video in our catalogue that uses animation.  We did our work against a green screen and then watched as the animators brought it to life.

I think they did a fantastic job." Liam Corcoran, Two Hours Traffic

The spotlight shifts today to the province of Nova Scotia with Gypsophilia’s video for “Hietzing/Battery Life”.  As you might expect from a group with such a unique and cool sound – this video brings to life the music in an unexpected way, so who better to share the concept and creation than the nominated director himself Scott Simpson.  Here’s his note to us…

"Hietzing" was initially conceived of as a short film about a typical "everyman" getting ready to go to work in a futuristic/fantasy setting. The idea was to use a simple narrative to comment on our increasing dependence on mobile technology: Everything needs power. We rely so much on batteries. And yet, we so often neglect our own "energy source"!...

It became a music video when I realized that the song was a perfect soundtrack for the concept. What we ended up with was an incredibly fun experiment that mixes practical effects, computer animation, and an amazing Charlie Chaplin-esque performance from Zuppa Theatre's Ben Stone!      Scott Simpson, Playmaker Films

Thanks for that Scott – very cool!  Be sure Check out this 'energizing' video.  SABS

From the province of Newfoundland & Labrador... Pathological Lovers with their video for Best Served.  An homage, if you will, to the classic horror movie #boriskarloff. Directed by Jordan Canning and starring the band along with some of their NL pals including Hey Rosetta! front man Tim Baker, Jazz artist Duane Andrews and Republic of Doyle star Krystin Pellerin.  Here's a note from one of the fellas about their nomination...

"We're very excited that the Best Served video has been nominated for this year's ECMAs. We spent a lot of time and tenderness working on this video and some wonderful people really stepped up to the bar (and ordered a pint for us on their tab). Every part of this video was truly handmade (and to use that tired old term...independent) and appropriately, many favours were called in. Pause and check the credits at the end of the piece 'cause every single name was fundamental to what's shining on that black and white screen/scream."  Jody Richardson, Pathological Lovers

Thanks for that Jody! Give it a look…good stuff. SABS
