Republic of Doyle: Love on the Line

Updated: March 30, 2011

Much has transpired since our first post on this topic.  Much has - shall we say - been revealed about the St.John's Politician currently lovin' on our Leslie.  Now while it would be wrong of us to impose our feelings regarding Sgt. Bennett's relationship with the Mayor (rotter that he is) we are going to say - without hesitate that we love Jake Doyle.  We love Jake & Leslie together.  There!  We said it! And if you're like us - you can't help but feel the marginally tarnished Mayor Clarke is majorly flawed.  And don't get us started on Allison....ugh.

With only a few episodes left in Season 2 of Republic of Doyle - it's hard to say where things will net out...but we would like to get your say on what you'd like to see happen...drop a line in the comment box below and let us knowSABS

This is LOVE month here on Sea and be Scene and so when the relationship between our favourite St. John’s PI and the lovely Sargent came up in a ‘friendly’ conversation the other day…it got us thinking.  Thinking about not only love Republic of Doyle style but why for centuries we are compelled by the drama of it all.

Let’s face it - novels, theatre, Soap Operas…pretty much every Country song ever written…is based on that rocky road to love – be it unrequited or wrongly done by, the pining kind or the passionate – we are most drawn to those stories whose journey towards ‘togetherness’ is anything but lovely.

Leslie lights up - Republic of DoyleMany fans of the show  have been rooting for Leslie and Jake to get back together.  Yes, he’s a scoundrel, but her eyes light up when she sees him and the chemistry is unmistakable.

The above noted conversation (aka - debate) was sparked by the belief that Leslie would be better with the Mayor…solid, poised, ethical (so far).  All of that fodder led to the age old bad boy vs. nice guy argument, and on and on it went…and while we never did see eye to eye – we did agree it’s awfully fun to watch unfold.

Having said that – WE WANT YOUR OPINION! Who you think Sargent Leslie Bennett(Krystin Pellerin) should be with and why?

Would you vote for Mayor William Cadigan Clarke (seriously that’s his name…talk about your nice guy handles right?) played by actor Rick Roberts OR would your vote go to the reckless but right sweet Jake Doyle played by Allan Hawco?

We await your word on it and leave you with these “True love cannot be found where it does not truly exist, nor can it be hidden where it truly does” SABS

SABS Salute for A/V support

  1. I love the idea of Jake and Leslie together, but I also like it when they are adversarial. Putting Sgt. Bennett into a relationship with the mayor is a brilliant stroke dramatically, because it forces Jake to watch from afar (while Leslie longs for him from a distance, as well). It also lets us see Jake being loyal to Leslie by keeping her secret (if he continues to do so...). We'll see if he can take the high road, and do right by her.

At first glance, it may seem as though this is just another storytelling ploy to keep the romantic leads apart, but I like to look at the big picture. What it's really doing is showing us the depth of feelings that are emerging from both sides. When they do finally come together (it's inevitable, isn't it? Isn't it???), we will know more of the strength of their relationship.

  3. She should love me, of course :)

She should love me, of course. :)

But in all seriousness, I vote for Jake (no brainer), and I truly believe that Jake is who she loves deep down inside.

I do think that it would be too easy and not terribly dramatically interesting if they got together permanently too soon. I think the whole Alison thing is adding some excellent dramatic tension to this season
that allows the audience to learn more about Jake and Leslie. Plus, I'm a guy and let's face it Hot Cop + Hot Crown = a feast for the eyes.

Part of why we watch is to see how the tension between Jake and Leslie will develop, ebb and flow. Take that away too soon and we lose one of the elements that keeps us coming back.

So Jake b'y, I'm pullin' for ye, but not too soon!

  4. I agree with you, Marc (and of course, your observation is excellent, Stephanie ;-) , but I would also like to see Jake and Leslie also have a real relationship someday. Too often, shows keep the 'keep-away' going too long, and we lose interest. I'd like to think in a future season we will actually get to see Jake and Leslie as a couple. If any show can break that 'Moonlighting' curse, it's RoD!

  5. My vote is for Jake. The Mayor may be smooth but,I believe, as his middle name implies, he is a cad, perhaps a smooth cad but still a cad.
Jake on the other may be a bit of a rascal but a likeable rascal.

  6. Jake is the dude too look after the Lady Cop, she has serious issues containing herself in the presence of the Newfoundland Master. For her to attain utopian happiness, she must follow her heart into the arms of the known rascal and feel the flood of uncontrollable want. She will know the term woman, well!

  7. I like how the show is playing with opposites right now. Allison is easy-going and low-maintenance and seems to just want a fun, sexy time with Jake, not a real relationship, which is what Jake probably thinks he wants. And the mayor is (at least so far) respectful, proper, and dignified, exactly unlike Jake. Now that Leslie and Jake have both got what they wanted, let's see how long it takes them to figure out that they're both bored.

  8. Well it seems unanimous how fans here want this to go, and I agree with TV Gord both that the 'keepaway' can't go on too long and that if any show can manage the get together, RoD is it. We don't want this wonderful show to turn into Who's the Boss, right?

I have to say that I am loving the Alison/Jake thing right now but missing Leslie too. She used to have the best lines but last episode we saw almost nothing of her... Plus she sounds more like the Newfoundlanders I know than anyone else on the show. Jake is great but he sounds more like a real Newfoundlander in person or in interviews than on the show.

But I guess that's another topic...

  9. Love the show and the writing...alot of depth here. I cannot stand Jake's choice with Allison, her personality matches her looks, can't stand her. I love watching Jake and the decisions he makes, good or bad. Leslie and Jake are meant to be...maybe.....

but I think that deep down Leslie needs more than Jake can give her and she knows it..he will break her heart......I would love to be a writer on the show!!!

.something about his character tells me that Jake will be a loner...always looking on the outside....wishing....wanting....

    I love Republic of Doyle......

  10. Personally, I like them apart for now. Season 2 is too early to put them together if the show is going to enjoy additional seasons. When they get together it should be for good and I think the show would be less fun if Jake and Leslie were in a serious committed relationship. I love Jake's shenanigans too much for him to settle down :) Maybe a series finale wedding (but not for a long time to come).

    Just my 2 cents :)

  11. I would love to see her with Jake. She would keep him on his toes. Would make for some interesting scenes.

  12. From the time that Jake first met Leslie at the hospital I thought that they had chemistry, and my opinion of that has not changed over the course of season 1, and now through the first 6 episodes of season 2.

Not that the mayor isn't a great guy, and that Alison and Jake seem to have something, but seeing that scene tonight by the door just reiterated my feelings. Jake and Leslie were meant to be together, end of story.

They are both very passionate people, and would make a lovely couple!

    Go Jake!

  13. I have really enjoyed watching Republic of Doyle. Even though I only started watching at the beginning of season 2 and have purchased and seen season 1, I believe relationships not only have a purpose, but have meaning. Since the hospital scene between Jake and Leslie, there is some spark aas well as chemistry. If a man and a woman have similiar interests, values, and work within the similar field of work, they tend to talk more about their cases.

Jake and Leslie would be a better fit together then Jake and Allison. Current episode we all saw pretty much said it all when Allison really wants to know when Jake is going to grow up. Stop being arrested, going to jail, being punched in the face, etc, etc. As I watch these episodes, it is all about how the relationship unfolds. Both Jake and Leslie do actually show how much they care for each in a serious way. Both still like to have a little fun, but able to do what it takes to communicate with each other. If I was Leslie, I would go for Jake instead of the Mayor.
