Jenn Grant – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation: Singer and Songwriter

Place of Birth: Charlottetown, PEI

Currently Resides: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

I like to get Just Us French Roast Beans and grind them up in the kitchen. I never used to drink coffee because I was always worried about losing my voice, and being anxious. But I feel more relaxed now about everything. You only live once. I would like some coffee with lots of milk- from a happy cow- please.

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

The Company House on Gottigen Street in Halifax - run by my good friends Mary Anne Daye and Heather Gibson (Daye?!)   It's close to home, and reminds me a little of the Khyber days.  I love a bar that's painted red.

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

For clothes? I like American Apparel (especially when Sandy, Gillian, or beautiful blonde girl are working.) H n' M (when Chris MacDonald is working) or Sweet Pea- or sweet Pea's sister store. The woman who runs that place is amazing. But if you mean for groceries - then Local Source on Charles St. or Pete's Frootique downtown (when I can afford the expensive cheese).

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

My friend Keith designed the new market and he took me on a special tour of the top of the building.  It's such an amazing building, with plants growing on the roof, overlooking the water.  Its romantic architecture and a beautiful view for a beautiful and well-loved city.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:

1. Go to the new market, probably on a Saturday for local veggies and cook a feast with your friends and family.

2. Head to Long Lake with a dog and a picnic (if this is my dog he will eat your picnic).

3. To the Oxford Theater for some popcorn and a movie.

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

I moved here when I was ten from PEI with my mom and brother.

I wasn't sure what all this "Haligonian business" was about at first. But it's where I found my love of salty air again, started my music career- found friends like family to keep me sane in the music business. Found my future husband. Grew up in my teenage years in a pale green salt box house. Got in trouble more than often but still had a great time at Queen Elizabeth High School. (Went to every school on Robie Street).  And learned to love boats and even painting of boats sold outside on the streets in summer.
