love actuallyMy #4 Movie – Love Actually (2003) (Universal Pictures)

I am about to write something that will invariably cause the majority of male visitors to read only ‘blah blah blah blah’ from that point on – but it must be written…

From the makers of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and Funeral comes my #4 choice Love Actually.

Just so we're clear... they had me at Hugh – but Mr. Grant is joined by an incredible group of actors in this story of eight different couples dealing with... you guessed it - LOVE.  Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Keira Knightly…and so it goes – amazing supporting cast too.Andrew Lincoln - Love Actually

From the opening seen at the arrivals gate to the  ‘carollers’ at the door, to the multi-lingual restaurant proposal, to the on-stage kiss…everything I love in a movie – the laughter and touching moments and tears indeed…I mean when Emma Thompson gets that Joni Mitchell cd – forget about it - I was a wreck.

While we’re on the subject of Joni – I so loved the DVD extras – the commentary is truly brilliant and Hugh is hilarious to say the least…but when writer/director Richard Curtis talks about why he used the song Both Sides Now – it really brings a whole new level of cool to the scene.  I never realized that Joni had written and recorded that song first at the age of 25 – pretty deep stuff for someone so young.  If you haven’t heard her updated version a quarter century later…well do yourself a favour – it is magic!

This movie makes it into the redux edition of my Top 10 Christmas movies...but truthfully it’s one that could be enjoyed anytime of the year. I love the message and I too believe that if you look – you’ll find love actually is…all around. sb
