Imagine getting a glimpse of what your life would have been…could have been – if only you’d chosen differently.  That’s the premise of this amazing movie starring Nicolas Cage as Jack Campbell - a beyond wealthy Wall Street broker who, after 13 years apart gets a message from Kate Reynolds (Téa Leoni) his college sweetheart on Christmas Eve.  Campbell goes to sleep that night and wakes up in this ‘other world’ – with a wife, 2 kids and a house in New Jersey. Quite the opposite of all that he’s known and valued…the rest of the movie Jack spends navigating his way thru bowling leagues, tire sales and daycare only to realize just how truly rich a man he would have been had he given up “the plan” and stayed with Kate.

As I've demonstrated here countless times before - for me, summarizing in general is a difficult thing – but trying to do it for The Family Man, was darn near impossible.  I have watched it so many times that I know the dialogue – the funny lines, the touching scenes – there’s just something about it...and something about those 3 words “I choose us” – that has always struck a chord with me.  I loved the full circle of this movie – how it began and ended the airport – the two characters reversed in their positions, but after all that time and all that ‘life’ that had happened separately - those 3 words for those 2 people remained true.Piven & Cage - The Family Man

I used to say – if I’ve paid my money and don’t get a good cry in the bargain – then that movie-going experience was 'sub-par' (to quote Jack Campbell).  I remember the Christmas this movie opened – I saw it three times in the theatre and cried every time.  Now a days there aren’t enough hours for that kind of luxury – but I do have my own copy of The Family Man and I put it on whenever I have a hankerin’ - Christmastime  or not…and I still well.  I laugh a lot too as Cage and Leoni are very funny, as is Jeremy Piven who plays Jack’s buddy Arnie. (who FYI is a far cry from Ari...just sayin')

I simply love this movie and I choose it – as my #2 favourite Christmas movie of all time.  You’ve just got to see it for yourself. sb
