christmas vacationMy #8 movie – Christmas Vacation (1989)

This movie was my first brush with the Griswold family.  I hadn’t then and still haven’t seen the original or any other film from the Vacation franchise.  Truth be told - I was dragged to this movie by my friends Anne and Nancy (no - not that Anne & Nancy).  It was one of those occasions when they picked the flick and fortunately it was fantastically funny (I love alliteration…and I love Christmas movies).

In Christmas Vacation Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprise their roles as Clark and Ellen, along with new additions Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear) as Audrey and Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) as Rusty Griswold.

This movie is funny from the get go…from buying the tree, to the overdone outdoor décor, to the squirrel…and don’t get me started on Cousin Eddy…when he walked in the room wearing that white sweater with the black dickey and started drinking eggnog…unbelievable!!!Christmas-Vacation3

I’ll always watch my VHS copy (yes - I'm old) at least 2 or 3 times when I’m wrapping presents and then whenever I can catch it on TV…it’s just one of those movies.

Written by the legendary John Hughes – this film like all of his movies - had a message behind the laughs.  And like so many of us Clarke Griswold wants this Christmas to be perfect.  As you would imagine it ends up being anything but – still, when it’s all said and done - if we’re surrounded by our family and friends well – that’s a pretty great gift…no matter how much they drive us crazy!!! sb  (Did I type that last part out loud?)

  1. This one is a must... I have 2 copies of it and I get it in every year just before Christmas. Everyone has a cousin Eddie in the family and Randy Quaid steals the scenes.. Timeless..
