elfMy #5 Movie – Elf (2003) (New Line Cinema)

Just plain Christmas goodness!!!  I remember the day I saw this movie for the first time. Worn down emotionally and feeling chilly even in the Florida air – it was Christmas of ’03.  Cold Mountain and Master and Commander, while both great films were far from festive in their message or motif – so let’s just say Elf was just the the ticket for this girl. I don’t think I’ve laughed more in a movie theatre.  Will Ferrell plays the wide eyed and wonderful Buddy – adopted as a baby and raised by elves – he knows nothing but Santa’s world at the North Pole until one year at Christmas he discovers his true identity and journeys to New York in search of his real father played by James Caan.

All of cast -  including Bob Newhart, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel and Ed Asner - is great, and I’ve gotta mention too, one of my favourites, the hilarious Amy Sedaris – as everyone works with this crazy premise, this funny script and this big man in tights to deliver  just the right mix of Christmas kitsch.

mingming

Uncredited for his role as 'Ming Ming' actor Peter Billingsly is best friends with director Jon Favereau and appears in all of his films - you may also remember one his first roles in the biz as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story"...cool huh?

It must be said that since that first viewing 7 years ago – I believe I have seen Elf – 700 times…yes I love it, but my 3 ¾ year old LOOOOOOVES it, so instead of the 2 or 3 times a season – it’s been viewed 2 or 3 times a day this year.  But you know – I still love it!  And I think embracing the code of the elves is a perfect plan for all of us no matter the time of year:

  1. Treat every day like Christmas
  2. There’s room for everyone on the “Nice” list
  3. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear

Amen!  As we enter the top 5 of my favourite Christmas movies of all time – let me remind you…I love Christmas and I love Christmas movies…and I like whispering too! sbi like whispering too
