Laurel Martell – At Home Here in Nova Scotia

Occupation:  Parks Canada Public Outreach Education Officer (Fortress of Louisbourg), Musician/vocalist*

Place of Birth:  Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

Currently Resides:  Albert Bridge, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a coffee?

Wherever I can spend time with good friends! Debbie and Gary’s kitchen, Robin’s Donuts on Welton Street (Sydney)…and Wentworth Perk (Sydney) top my list!

Where’s your favourite place in Nova Scotia to grab a pint?

I prefer my “beverages” with a side order of live music in a relaxed, pub-style atmosphere…(and occasionally onion rings).  There are too many great places with great entertainment to pick just one…

Where’s your favourite place to shop in Nova Scotia?

Hmm…Costco is a “must-shop” when I get to Halifax (Christmas chocolate in bulk, need I say more??), as is the Freak Lunchbox on Barrington Street…it’s like stepping back into the sugary-sweetness of my childhood (Garbage Candy, anyone?)  Closer to home, the Mayflower Mall, Canadian Tire and Home Depot (believe it or not) are frequent shopping venues…

Where in Nova Scotia would we stand to see your favourite view?

Near the ocean along the back road to the Fortress of Louisbourg when the waves are crashing in.

Name 3 things we’ve gotta do when we visit Nova Scotia:

  1. Hike the Cape Breton Highlands
  2. Enjoy a California Club Sandwich on oatmeal bread (with shoestring fries!) at McKelvie’s in Halifax
  3. Visit the Fortress of Louisbourg

What makes Nova Scotia such a special place on earth for you?

I’m a Cape Breton girl through and through!  My roots are here.  My family, my friends…everything I hold most dear is here!  Add to that: the music, the spirit, the culture, and the scenic beauty…there are so many things that make this a special place for me…so many things that make it so easy to stay!!

*SABS note  - if you've ever tuned into the Christmas Daddies telethon you've seen Laurel performing up a storm.  The girl is fabulously talented and then some...solo or with her group Zodiac...she's got it all goin' on...and we hear you on the bulk chocolate deal there LM! SABS

  1. Laurel is one of the Cape's finest talents... A world class performer and all around class-act, indeed!

  2. I love Laurel's voice. That deep rich contralto with the warm breathiness...a rare find indeed. I recommend her to anyone.
