7 in ’11 for Sutherland

Check the current stats on Saint John, NB native Donald Sutherland for 2011 and you’ll see he’s got 7 movies on the docket.  If the studios stick to their release dates and the production rumours hold true the 75 year Hollywood veteran will be truly busy – from promotional junkets to on-set performance…there’s no slow down for Sutherland in this New Year.

the-mechanic-2011The first of his films hits theatres January 28thThe Mechanic (see trailer above).  It’s a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson flick of the same name…subtitled “Killers of Killers” – and those three words pretty much sum up the plot.  Sutherland plays Harry McKenna who mentors an elite assassin Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham).  When Harry gets killed Bishop makes it his mission to get those that killed his friend…so, not so warm and fuzzy.  Then again director Simon West (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) it’s all about action. And besides Sutherland rarely gets cast “warm and fuzzy” except for maybe fleeting moments in Pride & Prejudice (2005), but that’s a judgement call.

I was up for a great part but they told me: "Sorry, you're the best actor but this part calls for a guy-next-door type. You don't look as if you've ever lived next door to anyone."

Sutherland’s remaining roles this year will see him playing the dead father of a Roman Soldier in The Eagle, a Horrible Boss, a professor in Man on a Train and a Governor in The Truth about War in Heaven and on the list goes.  Always changing – never type cast – perhaps that’s what keeps the actor so busy and after more than 160 acting roles - still going strong.
