A Song…

First I saw this video and then I read this quote…

"I picked up music in the same way that a carpenter's son learns the trade. He passed it on," says CatherineCatherine MacLellan MacLellan.

…and what began as research for an upcoming feature on the artist Catherine MacLellan PEI – detoured into a spotlight of sorts on a song that means so much to so many.

Catherine’s father Gene MacLellan wrote the song Snowbird – and I thought it was amazing to hear her sweet voice sing it…to hear the daughter and the songwriter celebrating that legendary piece of music and sharing it as only she can.

And I was amazed to learn that Snowbird was only Gene’s second composition and written in about half an hour.  Covered by Chet Atkins, Loretta Lynn, Perry Como, Hank Snow, Bing Crosby, Percy Faith, Rita MacNeil and the King himself, Elvis Presley – it was the song that launched Anne Murray’s career.

And get this – it was released back in 1969 as a “B” side to a single – some station in the States flipped it, played it and the rest was record sale history – topping one million and marking the first time in history that a Canadian Female Artist ever scored American Gold. Fate takes a hand – destined to be – I guess.

You never know what it takes to make a hit – but you sure know one when you hear it.  Right in this very moment – as you are reading this – there are thousands and thousands of people around the world putting pen to paper, pick to guitar, demo to disc – in hopes of capturing that same magic…write on…we’ll be waiting! For the Record…

Here are the words to the Gene MacLellan song that was the inaugural inductee into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame –

Snowbird

Beneath its snowy mantle cold and clean,
The unborn grass lies waiting for its coat to turn to green.
The snowbird sings the song he always sings,
And speaks to me of flowers that will bloom again in spring.
When I was young my heart was young then, too.
And anything that it would tell me, that's the thing that I would do.
But now I feel such emptiness within,
For the thing that I want most in life's the thing that I can't win.

Spread your tiny wings and fly away,
And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day.
The one I love forever is untrue,
And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.

The breeze along the river seems to say,
That he'll only break my heart again should I decide to stay.
So, little snowbird, take me with you when you go,
To that land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow.

Spread your tiny wings and fly away,
And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day.
The one I love forever is untrue,
And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.
Yeah, if I could I know that I would fly away with you.

 And just so we're clear...

The artist feature on award winning singer songwriter Catherine MacLellan is forthcoming…what can I say – I got sidetracked by a song...
