NLAC CBC Emerging Artist Award Recipient for 2011 is Jordan Bennett
Jordan Bennett is a multi-disciplinary visual artist of Mi’kmaq decent from the province’s west coast. He works in a variety of media which often incorporates traditional aboriginal craft, new media, and performance. Through sculpture, digital media, text-based media, installation, painting, performance, and various others; he strives to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes and assumptions about aboriginal issues and contemporary culture.
His work has been featured in a variety of publications including the world wide published Skateboard/Lifestyle magazine COLOR. An avid skateboarder, Jordan reconfigures skateboards into works of art.
In 2010 his work was shown in five curated group exhibitions in Toronto, Winnipeg and Banff. He was one of four artists selected for an Aboriginal Performance Art Series in 2011 at Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre in Kingston, Ontario just before he was part of a group exhibition at the Ottawa Art Gallery.
This year has been a big one for Jordan, seeing his first solo exhibition happen at Alternator Gallery in B.C. as well as being a part of an installation in New York’s Museum of Art and Design.
